|Over 50 years have passed,
but we have not forgotten...
Welcome to this website... first created in 2008 and last updated in 2021... and dedicated to
the officers and enlisted personnel who served with Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron 462 at Phu
Bai, South Vietnam during the period of August 1968 - September 1969. The content is based
substantially upon the tour book that was produced while we were in country. Lt. Ed Hinkle was
in charge of that project and to him and his staff I will be ever grateful for capturing the essence of
our tour so memorably.
A major portion of this website is devoted to the memoirs of squadron mate Lt. Roy
Stauth. Throughout his 30 easy to read chapters, he describes our tour with such
detail, insight, humor and emotion, that you will feel as though you are actually
reliving the entire experience from beginning to end.
We have had two squadron reunions during the past fifty years. The first was held
at Pensacola in 2009 and the second one was held at San Diego in 2018. Both were
well attended by former squadron members and spouses. Photos of these events can be
viewed by clicking on the links at the top of this page.
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of our esteemed commanding
officer Colonel Ron Nelson in May of 2019 at the age of 87. A memorial service was
held by the colonel's family at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego and was
attended by three of our former squadron members: Dave Taylor, Joe Versaggi and
Mike Webb. Click here for details
Former squadron pilot Bob Solbeck recently suggested I read a book called "The
Greatest Beer Run Ever" by Chick Donohue. I just finished it and can highly
recommend it to anyone wanting a fresh perspective of the war in Vietnam at the
time we were there.
I hope you enjoy browsing through this on-line tour book. If you have any
